Topic:

Policy Trends Affecting Juvenile Justice

There is a need to transform the juvenile justice system in Illinois. Studies have shown that confinement does not help change behavior. Enhancing fairness for all youth and offering strong community-based resources are needed to help the youth who are caught in the justice system.

Elizabeth Clarke, President and Founder of Juvenile Justice Initiative, will speak about the issues, challenges, and progress for juvenile justice reform.

About the Speaker:

Ms. Clarke is currently the founder and President of the Juvenile Justice Initiative, a statewide advocacy organization to promote fair, rational and effective juvenile justice policies in Illinois.

Prior to developing the Juvenile Justice Initiative, Ms. Clarke served as Juvenile Justice Counsel for the Office of the Cook County Public Defender for six years, and served for 15 years in the Office of the State Appellate Defender, including appointments as Legislative Liaison and Juvenile Justice Coordinator.

Meeting Sponsor: Practising Law Institute.

Stop by the table during the meeting to learn more about Discover Plus, PLI’s eBook library which contains treatises, course handbooks, answer books, legal forms and program transcripts

Door Prizes: 2 giftcards will be raffled during the meeting courtesy of LexisNexis. Check out their InfoPro for news and tips for librarians.

The Community Service Committee will be collecting monetary donations to benefit Blessings in a Backpack, which provides food to elementary school children who are in households under the poverty line. The children receive a “backpack” with food at the end of each school week with enough food for the weekend, a time when many impoverished children go without eating because they aren’t receiving a school breakfast or lunch on those days.

In kind donations will be made to Chicago Hopes. Chicago Hopes provides housing and assistance to Chicago Public School students in temporary housing situations. A donation wish list of school supplies will be posted on the CALL Website shortly.
