General Summary


Reporting to the Director of the Law Library, the Senior Reference Librarian provides general and in-depth reference and research services to law faculty and law students, University faculty and students, and other library users. The Senior Reference Librarian is committed to a culture of learning, combining strong organizational and supervisory skills with the enthusiasm to initiate and support innovation in the Reference Department through services. This position is primarily responsible for the development, coordination, management and implementation of the law library’s reference services and policies. More specifically, overseeing and managing the law library’s efforts to support faculty research and scholarship.


Responsibilities & Duties

Manage and oversee faculty support and reference services provided to all patrons of the law library

Coordinate and participate in the law library’s faculty liaison program and research instruction

Assist in the hiring, training and supervision of full and part-time reference support staf

Participate in team effort and quality of service towards the overall efficient operation of the law library and college of law

Prepare and provide research presentations in support of law school seminars and courses; and other other department activities, such as:

Authoring and editing print and electronic research guides (LibGuides)

Content for the law library website

A display of faculty publications

Performs other duties as assigned


Education & Experience


Minimum of five years of experience in the public services area of a law library with one year supervisory experience


Preferred Requirements


M.L.S. from accredited library school and J.D.


Managerial Responsibilities


This position directly supervises and coordinates the efforts of the law library’s professional librarians. This may include areas related to supervision, interviewing and selection, discipline, performance appraisal, training, and career development of personnel. In consultation with the Director of the Law Library, the person in this position is responsible for establishing policy and practice affecting the law library’s efforts to provide reference and support for faculty research.

Aptitude for using computers in the delivery of information services


Familiarity with integrated library systems


Demonstrated oral and written communication skills


Ability to interact effectively with others
