Coordinates library services within one or more library functional and/or subject-specific areas. Uses high level of subject specific expertise to build library collections, consult in a specialty field, and/or supervise and coordinate one or more primary library programs.

M1: Supervises the daily activities of business or technical support or operations team. Sets priorities for the team to ensure task completion; coordinates work activities with other supervisors. Decisions are guided by policies, procedures and business plan; receives guidance and oversight from manager. Typically does not perform the work supervised.

The job supervises and monitors a team of support staff responsible for coordinating library services within one or more library functional and/or subject-specific areas. Monitors the planning and processing of library collections.

1) Coordinates budgeting, expenses, planning, and procedural changes for library initiatives., 2) Controls the execution of tasks within a particular subject or functional area requiring an in-depth knowledge of library practices and procedures., 3) Supervises the building and expansion of library collections, consults in a specialty field, and plans one or more primary library programs., 4) Interviews, hires, and trains employees; sets and adjusts staff schedules, and manages performance., 5) Performs other related work as needed.

Unit -specific Responsibilities:

1) Responsible for all management duties, including hiring, training and performance management for up to eight (8) full-time clerical positions and additional part-time student staff.

2) Creates and delivers the training essential to performing receiving and rapid cataloging tasks; this includes training that addresses the use of online systems and tools, as well as local procedures.

3) Maintains online procedures and training documentation; revises documentation as needed and communicates these changes to staff.

4) Communicates any changes in policies or procedures occurring outside of the unit, or elsewhere in the department, that may impact the processes of the unit.

5) Evaluates performance of staff; when appropriate, implements disciplinary action (up to and including termination) in consultation with the Head of Acquisitions Services and Library Human Resources.

6) Keeps section Head informed of any issues concerning the operations of the unit and/or performance of staff.

7) Directs, distributes, and oversees work of the unit to meet the goals of the section, ensuring the following:

8) Receipts for new materials are accurately processed in a timely manner

9) Staff are performing assigned tasks according to priorities and are following established policies and procedures.

10) Staff in the unit are identifying problems and are following the appropriate course of action.

11) Overseeing the management of the department’s mail room and ensuring that staff are properly sorting and triaging in-coming shipments of materials.

12) Conducts regular quality control review of the work of the unit; provides additional staff training and coaching if necessary.

14) Solves complex problems related to the unit.

15) Maintains an open and ongoing dialog with other supervisors and managers in Collection Support, Technical Services, Preservation, and Collection Management with regard to workflow, changes in procedures, staff assignments, and/or any issues that arise.

16) Attends meetings, training sessions, or other library functions, and participates actively in discussions related to long-term distribution of duties and workflows.

Working Conditions

Physical Demands:

1) Ability to bend, crouch, or stoop.

2) Ability to push/pull loaded book carts.

3) Ability to carry or lift loads of up to 49 lbs.

4) Ability to sit for 4 hours or more and use computers extensively for 4 hours or more.

5) Ability to see, including color, depth perception, or clarity; must be able to visually focus on print and electronic material for long periods.

6) Ability to make repetitive wrist, hand, or finger movements.

7) Effective audio-visual discrimination and perception.

8) Ability to operate equipment necessary to perform job.

9) Ability to Use Standard Work Station Equipment.

10) Ability to Use Standard Office Equipment.


Education, Experience, and Certifications

Minimum requirements include a college or university degree in related field.

Minimum requirements include knowledge and skills developed through 5-7 years of work experience in a related job discipline.

Preferred Qualifications:


1) Bachelor’s Degree


1) Minimum of five (5) years of related library experience

2) Supervisory experience

Technical Knowledge or Skills:

1) Knowledge of searching online databases.

2) Knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, and database software

3) Reading knowledge of at least one (1) non-English language
