Position:               Headquarters Librarian

Location:              Chicago, Illinois

Salary Range:    CL27 – $61, 571 – 100,119 with promotion potential to CL-28 or
CL28 – $73, 808 – 119,987 depending upon experience and educational qualifications.

Job Summary

The Libraries of the U.S. Courts for the Seventh Circuit include a headquarters library and four branch libraries located in Milwaukee, Madison, South Bend, and Indianapolis. This position is in the headquarters library in Chicago. The incumbent is part of the team providing library services, information, and materials to judges and judiciary staff in the Seventh Circuit. The library is also used by members of the bar and the public. The incumbent also participates in special projects, including archives, exhibits, and displays. The incumbent may have the opportunity to telework about once a week.

Representative Duties include the following. Other duties or special projects as assigned.

  • Performs legal and non-legal research and reference services.
  • Provides education and training to chambers and court staff on Westlaw, Lexis, Bloomberg Law, and other online legal research services.
  • Participates in public relations and outreach efforts.
  • Contributes to newsletters, research guides and web pages for patrons.
  • Maintains and assists with digital services and archiving.
  • Participates in a variety of court history and library projects.
  • Occasional travel to other libraries or courthouses within the circuit.


Required Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Library Science (MLS) from an ALA accredited school of Library or
    Information Science.
  • Minimum of one year of experience in a law library that provided an opportunity to acquire a
    thorough knowledge of the basic concepts, principles, policies, practices, and theories of
    librarianship.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and strong customer service orientation.
  • Ability to travel and telework when necessary or assigned.
  • Ability to work an 8-hour day between 8:00am-4:30pm (Mon-Fri.).

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A law degree from an accredited law school.
  • Archiving and editing experience in the context of digital collections.
  • Experience with ArchivesSpace or other digital archives resources.
  • Skill in conducting in-person and online training sessions or webinars.
  • Experience producing short training videos.
