About the Speaker:
Lori Andrews, Professor of Law and Director of the Institute for Science, Law and Technology, IIT Chicago-Kent College of Law was described by the ABA Journal as “a lawyer with a literary bent who has the scientific chops to rival any CSI investigator.” She teaches a law school class on the Law of Social Networks and is the author of the book I Know Who You Are and I Saw What You Did: Social Networks and the Death of Privacy (Simon and Schuster, 2013). She has written 13 other books, including three forensic mystery novels and a biography, Black Power, White Blood: The Life and Times of Johnny Spain, which explores a criminal case involving the Black Panthers. Her pro bono litigation involving emerging technologies caused the National Law Journal to list her as one of the “100 Most Influential Lawyers in America.” She received her BA summa cum laude from Yale College and her JD from Yale Law School.
Description of Talk:
“How Social Networks Are Changing Our Lives and Our Culture”
How many things did you reveal about yourself online today? Your opinion of a colleague? Your credit card number? Your photos from last night? These activities are common, but where does the information we post—even on what seem to be the most private or friendly of forums—truly go?
Offline, we have established legal rights—from the right to privacy to the right to a fair trial. But now social networks are turning those rights upside down. Colleges and employers routinely reject applicants because of information found on social networks. Jurors post details on a case and ask their friends to vote on whether the defendant should go to jail. Marketing companies collect information about you based on your travels on the Web, without your knowledge or consent.
The same power of information sharing that can topple governments can also topple a person’s career, marriage, finances, or even his or her future. Lori Andrews will describe how our digital identities on the Web (email, personal websites, and social media pages) are starting to overshadow our physical identities. She will also discuss how librarians are leading a movement to protect our rights online.

Each week, they deliver thousands of books to schools and nonprofits across Chicagoland.
Open Books welcomes any sellable book in good condition. This includes fiction, nonfiction, craft books, cookbooks, children’s books, textbooks, encyclopedias, and more! They also now accept CDs and DVDs in good playable condition. They cannot accept magazines, VHS tapes, or pre-college (K-12) textbooks.
