About the Speakers

Andrea Kramer and Alton Harris are attorneys and will be speaking on the topic of their book Breaking Through Bias: Communication Techniques for Women to Succeed at Work.  Andrea (Andie) S. Kramer is a partner in McDermott Will and Emery. She has a legal practice that covers all aspects of financial transactions and derivatives.  Andie is an adjunct professor at Northwestern University School of Law where she teaches classes on the taxation of financial derivatives. She is a founding member of McDermott Will & Emery’s Diversity Committee and co-chair of the Gender Diversity Subcommittee.  Alton (Al) B. Harris is a partner in Nixon Peabody.  He is a frequent writer and lecturer on the financial markets, financial regulation, and corporate governance. As an adjunct professor of law at Northwestern University Law School, he teaches courses on the regulation of derivative products and the financial markets. Andie and Al’s book, Breaking Through Bias: Communication Techniques for Women to Succeed at Work, presents an integrated set of communication techniques that women can use to avoid the discriminatory consequences of the stereotypes about women, men, work, leadership, and family that hold women back in the workplace.  The book states that women don’t need to change who they are to succeed in their chosen careers, rather, they need to anticipate biases that come from stereotypes and manage the impressions they make to avoid or overcome those biases.

Andie and Al will bring five complimentary copies of their book to the luncheon for a random drawing.

Help Hospitalized Veterans

Help Hospitalized Veterans’ primary mission is to enrich the lives of veterans and military personnel. Healing arts and crafts provide a therapeutic experience for all veterans including those who are hospitalized, in shelters, in convalescent homes and those undergoing therapy for a wide range of physical and mental challenges. Many veterans experience symptoms of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and/or Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) which increase the risk for depression, physical injuries, substance abuse and sleep problems. The kits, provided free of charge to the veteran, become a part of the patient’s treatment plan, giving them a creative outlet along with tangible therapeutic and rehabilitation benefits. They improve fine motor skills, cognitive functioning, memory improvement, anger issues and dexterity as well as decrease the severity of PTSD/TBI triggers including anxiety, memories, sadness and frustration.

The materials they are most in need of include:

  1. Acrylic paints for wood craft projects (non-toxic)
  2. Fine tip paint brushes
  3. Medium paint brushes
  4. Wood Glue (Elmer’s non-toxic)
  5. Sketch Pads (any size)

Cash Donations

Cash donations will be sent to the Wounded Warriors Project

Wounded Warrior Project provides free programs and services focused on the physical, mental, and long-term financial well-being of this generation of injured veterans, their families and caregivers. The long-term strategic goal of Wounded Warrior Project® (WWP) is to foster the most successful, well-adjusted generation of wounded service members in our nation’s history. We will accomplish this vision by raising awareness and enlisting the public’s aid for the needs of injured service members; helping injured servicemen and women aid and assist each other; and providing unique, direct programs and services to meet their needs.  Wounded Warrior Project® (WWP) positively impacts the lives of injured service members through a high-touch, holistic approach, reaching out to warriors at a personal level by engaging them at numerous points throughout their recovery continuum. By emphasizing our core programs – focused on Outreach and Engagement, Mental Health Support, Physical Health & Wellness, and Financial Assistance, Employment, and Education – WWP works to confront the spectrum of barriers to successful reintegration that many veterans face. As one of the fastest-growing national charities, WWP provides the largest scope of programs and services to veterans at every phase and stage of their recovery and transition.
