Topic
Easy Buttons and Digital Natives: pernicious myths that impede productivity. In a provocative talk on what legal professionals don’t do well, Casey will take aim at the erroneous assumptions that cause us to ignore core technology training to our detriment. Casey will situate this failing in the broader context of shifts in the legal market and extoll the virtues of competence-based learning.
About the Speaker
Casey Flaherty is a former in-house and outside counsel who now consults on legal operations, strategic sourcing, technology, process improvement, and metrics. The founder of Procertas, Casey is the creator of the Legal Tech Assessment, a first-of-its-kind benchmarking and training tool for legal technology competence on core desktop software (Word, Excel, PDF). Casey is also the primary author of Unless You Ask: A Guide To Getting More From External Relationships, written and published in partnership with the ACC Legal Operations Section. Due to his efforts to create and promote a more rigorous, empirically-oriented approach to quality and spend management, Casey has been, inter alia, featured in The Washington Post, named an ABA Legal Rebel, and selected as one of the Fastcase 50. Casey also serves on the advisory board of Nextlaw Labs.

Community Service Project
In November we will be announcing a new volunteer opportunity with the Center for Economic Progress , a non-profit organization, in Chicago. Are you looking for a volunteer opportunity where your legal research skill and tax knowledge will be useful… an opportunity to work one on one to lift up working families and make them more stable? You can choose among several roles from tax preparation, Credit Geek, Savings Coach, or a Tax Site Specialist. Volunteers will work at one of 16 sites around the city, including downtown. At the November meeting, Donna Tuke will share her experiences as a tax site manager and volunteer. You can gain valuable new skills while directly impacting individuals and families. Law librarians with their understanding of tax laws and financial resources are especially appreciated. No law degree required!
