Topic

David Marzahl, CEO of The Center for Economic Progress (CEP), will speak about CEP’s mission to help income-eligible families and individuals improve their financial stability through their tax preparation services, along with tax representation before either the IRS or the Illinois Department of Revenue for tax controversies.  He will also talk about CEP’s services across Chicago, including financial health programming from financial coaching to credit repair and advice, and he will address the impact of the new GOP tax plan and how it will affect all taxpayers starting in 2019.

All of CEP’s services are free for those who qualify. Mobilizing more than 1,000 volunteers from all walks of life and professions, CEP reaches more than 24,000 families with its services.

About the Speaker   

David Marzahl serves as the CEO at the Center for Economic Progress (CEP) in Chicago. He is a leading voice and strategist on economy security issues, seeking to advance policies and practices to create a financial system that works for all Americans.  CEP is one of the nation’s premier providers of tax and financial services for low-income families, reaching 25,000 customers each year, giving them the tools to make sound choices. 

Mr. Marzahl was the founding director of the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant & Refugee Rights, promoting the rights and responsibilities of immigrants and refugees. He has a Master’s Degree in Political Economy from Northwestern University and a Certificate in Non-Profit Management from the Kellogg School of Management.  He serves on the boards of the Illinois Secure Choice Retirement Savings Program and Youth & Opportunity United (YOU), the steering committee of the Illinois Asset Building Group (IABG) and is an advisory board member of Second Federal Community Credit Union.

Community Service Project

In connection with the February business meeting, the Community Service Committee is working with the Greater Chicago Food Depository.  The Food Depository is Chicago’s food bank, partnering with over 700 agencies and programs including pantries, soup kitchens, shelters and responses for children, older adults and veterans. This network distributes food where it is needed most throughout Cook County. Every day they distribute the equivalent of 164,000 meals and they rely on donors & volunteers to make it happen.

CALL is offering several opportunities to help the Food Depository.

·         Food donations: Please bring any nonperishable canned and packaged foods (no glass) that have yet to expire to the business meeting. Most needed items include: Peanut Butter, Canned Beans, Canned Chili, Canned Soup, Canned Fruit & Vegetables, Canned Fish. 

·         Monetary donations: We will be collecting monetary donations at the business meeting.  Additionally, we have set up a Virtual Food Drive, where you can contribute online: http://www.myfooddrive.org/#CALL2018

·         Volunteer Day at the Food Depository: CALL members have an opportunity to donate their time during a Repack Session at the Food Depository on Saturday, March 3, 2018 from 1:00 PM to 3:45 PM.  The Food Depository is located at 4100 W Ann Lurie Place Chicago, IL 60632.  All volunteers need to register with GCFD, which includes an Electronic Waiver.  Additional details about the repack session duties and parking information is available on the CALL website.
