Travis McDade, Curator of Law Rare Books at University of Illinois College of Law

Topic

“It becomes my painful official duty…”: A story of insider theft, opioid addiction, and the Old South.

Travis McDade is the Curator of Law Rare Books and Associate Professor of Library Service at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.  Professor McDade is the country’s foremost expert on crimes against rare books, maps, documents, and other printed cultural heritage resources. He is the author of three books on the subject; The Book Thief: The True Crimes of Daniel Spiegelman,  Thieves of Book Row: New York’s Most Notorious Rare Book Ring and the Man Who Ended it, and Disappearing Ink: The Insider, the FBI, and the Looting of the Kenyon College Library. An article he wrote for the Oxford University Press blog called “The Difficulty of Insider Book Theft” was featured on The Atlantic’s The Week’s Best Pop Culture Writing and The New Yorker’s Page-Turner. Breaded mozzarella fried and served with our marinara sauce.

Classic Bruschetta

Crispy bread topped with a mixture of fresh diced tomatoes, extra virgin olive oil, balsamic glaze and roasted garlic.

Chopped Apple & Walnut Salad

Iceberg lettuce, arugula, grapes, celery, chives, apples and spiced walnuts with a blue cheese vinaigrette.

Spaghetti & Meatballs

Spaghetti served with our classic blend of tomatoes, basil, oregano and olive oil.

Chicken Piccata

Chicken breasts sautéed with capers and lemon butter and served on a bed of sautéed spinach.

Six-Cheese Cannelloni, roasted tomato sauce

Six Italian cheeses rolled in a crepe shell and baked with a roasted tomato sauce and seasoned breadcrumbs.

Community Service Project

There is hunger and food insecurity across Cook County affecting people of all ages, races, and genders. Join your fellow CALL members in trying to help this need by bringing non-perishable food supplies to our February meeting. All food donations will go to the Greater Chicago Food Depository https://www.chicagosfoodbank.org/

You may also make monetary donations as CALL’s Community Service Committee will be collecting cash at the meeting that will go to the Chicago Coalition for the Homeless.
