Community Service Committee school supply donations

The Community Service Committee will once again be collecting school supplies for Chicago Hopes at the September 18th CALL Business Meeting. Chicago HOPES for Kids collaborates with schools, shelters, and communities to establish after-school shelter-based tutoring programs throughout the city. These sessions feature educational support and cultural enrichment activities for Chicago’s school-aged homeless children.

The Committee will also be collecting monetary donations to benefit Blessings in a Backpack, which provides food to elementary school children who are in households under the poverty line. The children receive a “backpack” with food at the end of each school week with enough food for the weekend, a time when many impoverished children go without eating because they aren’t receiving a school breakfast or lunch on those days.

Chicago Hopes Donation Wish List:

Scissors for elementary school age children
Glue or glue sticks
Colored pencils
Rulers
Crayons (boxes of 8 or 16)
Construction paper
Lined paper
Computer paper
Stapler and staples
Tape
Folders
Permanent markers
Highlighters
Dry erase markers
Watercolor paints

The shelter program is also in need of paper cups, craft supplies, and paper towels.

Illinois Enacts UELMA

On August 26, Illinois Governor Pat Quinn signed Illinois SB 1941, our state’s version of the Uniform Electronic Legal Material Act (UELMA), into law as Public Act 98-1097. This makes Illinois the 11th state to enact UELMA into law (a complete list of states which have enacted UELMA is available on the AALL Government Relations Committee’s UELMA Resources Page). As we’ve noted in previous posts, the enactment of UELMA will help to ensure that electronically-published official primary law documents in Illinois are authenticated, preserved, and made permanently available to the public.

Thanks to all of the members of CALL and the AALL Government Relations Committee who helped make this happen. Special thanks go out to Keith Ann Stiverson and to Kip Kolkmeier, Lobbyist for the Illinois Library Association, for their efforts in getting the bill through the Illinois General Assembly.
