Speaker: Rhea Ballard-Thrower, Dean and University Librarian, University of Illinois Chicago, Topic: “Lessons on Leadership from a Little Black Girl who later became Dean of Libraries”
Rhea Ballard-Thrower recently started as the Dean and University Librarian at the University of Illinois Chicago. Prior to her appointment at UIC, Dean Ballard-Thrower was Executive Director of the Howard University Libraries and a tenured professor at the Howard University School of Law. she has also served as Director of the Howard University Law Library, Associate Director at the Georgia State University Law Library, and as a reference librarian for the Tarlton Law Library at the University of Texas-Austin. Ballard-Thrower has been a legal bibliography instructor, conference presenter, and author of many articles on law librarianship. Her current research examines how to direct libraries as campus change agents
At UIC, Ballard-Thrower also holds an affiliate faculty position at UIC Law, where she teaches Advanced Legal Research using the Inside-Out Prison Exchange Program pedagogy. In the program, she teaches law students and incarcerated students in the same classes at a correctional facility. Ballard-Thrower has a BA from the University of Cincinnati, a JD from the University of Kentucky, and an MLIS from the University of Michigan.
Community Service: Greater Chicago Food Depository
In connection with the November business meeting, the Community Service Committee is working to support the Greater Chicago Food Depository. The Food Depository is Chicago’s food bank, partnering with over 700 local agencies and programs, including pantries, soup kitchens and shelters for children, older adults and veterans. Every day they distribute over 267,000 meals, relying heavily on donors and volunteers to make it happen. The Covid-19 pandemic has dramatically increased food insecurity throughout the Chicagoland area. To meet the surging demand, the Food Depository is providing food at record amounts. By the end of June 2021, the Food Depository distributed more than 117M pounds of food and 97.5M meals. This represents more than a 25% increase from last year’s total.
The Community Service Committee has arranged several opportunities for our members to help the Food Depository this winter:
* Virtual Food Drive: We have set up a CALL Virtual Food Drive where you can pick out a virtual shopping cart full of food to donate to GCFD. Our goal is to donate 900 meals ($1 = 3 meals). Make a purchase or check our progress online: http://www.myfooddrive.org/#CALLfall2021
