At the CALL business meeting on Thursday, November 15, as part of our Veterans’ Day tribute, the Community Service Committee will collect donations to support Honor Flight Chicago. If you have about ten minutes to spare, this video, narrated by Gary Sinise, will tell you all you need to know about the work they do and why we’re proud to support them.
Please keep in mind that we’ll also be collecting toiletries and other necessities for Safe Haven, which provides housing opportunities to help Chicago-area veterans move from homelessness to self-sufficiency. Thank you!

The CALL Relations with Information Vendors and Continuing Education Committees presented a Brown Bag Lunch at John Marshall Law School on October 10, 2012. As Associate Director for Access & Organization at the John Marshall Law School, Ramsey Donnell has reviewed countless contracts, looking out for the library’s best interest. In an interesting and informative one hour session, Mr. Donnell shared some of his insights with librarians from CALL.
When negotiating contracts with vendors you must first and foremost consider how your library will use the service or product. Some of the things you need to pay special attention to include Authorized Users (how many people can use it, and who are they), Access (IP authentication or signing in with passwords), Limitations on Use (academic, commercial, administrative), Confidentiality, and Term and Termination. Don’t agree to anything you can’t, or won’t, adhere to; and make sure that you’re able to get what you need.

In honor of Veterans Day, the CALL Community Service Committee will be taking collections at the November business meeting to benefit two excellent local groups providing services to veterans. A Safe Haven helps veterans transition from homelessness to self-sufficiency with pride and purpose. The organization provides a range of housing services from transitional housing to permanent affordable homes, as well as additional services such as employment counseling to help each individual overcome the root causes of homelessness. Support A Safe Haven by donating the following items:
For infection and pest control reasons, all donations of fabric items must be new.
The committee will also be collection cash donations at the meeting to support Honor Flight Chicago, an organization whose mission is to honor our World War II veterans by arranging for them to visit the WWII memorial in Washington D.C.
